Iron Butterfly Ironweed Zones: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
Vernonia lettermannii is native to Oklahoma and Arkansas where it is found in areas that may be periodically very wet or dry, like gravelly riverbanks. 'Iron Butterfly' is a selection from the University of Georgia that is compact, well-branched, and very vigorous with open heads of deep violet, late summer and fall flowers. Its long, needle-like foliage resembles another Arkansas native, Amsonia hubrictii or Threadleaf Blue Star.;Use this neat ironweed for its fine foliage effect in full sun and dry to moist soils.
