Saccharum (Erianthus) giganteum
Sugarcane Plumegrass Zones: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
In our part of east Tennessee, from September into November, it seems that every rural roadside that has some trees and a good slope to it, has got Plumegrass growing on it that radiates such an intense white light when the flower heads are backlit by the afternoon sun. Virtually leafless flower stalks shoot up 9 to 10 feet into the sky, well above sparsely-leaved clumps of grass. And these white, fluffy, seed heads when back lit seem to float and glow in the autumn air. Plumegrass likes well drained but not dry, acid soil and a little more sun than shade. It's fast growing but never makes a dense clump so plant it behind something or underplant (with Sumac and Aromatic Aster) in a place where you'll view it facing west in the afternoon. This is a "must do". Cat# 1423 -more info- Saccharum (Erianthus) giganteum, Sugarcane Plumegrass

Salvia guaranitica
Anise Sage Zones: 7, 8, 9
If you want rich strong indigo blue flowers all summer long, this one's for you. Although considered half-hardy by many (ours have persisted planted here in zone 6 for the past 6 years), Anise Sage grows 2 to 4 feet tall in full sun and average soil, in an open upright manner. Rich, rich, true blue, 1 inch, 2-lipped flowers which hummingbirds love, are borne on open racemes over bright kelly green leaves. Even if your climate may be too cool in winter for Anise Sage, you must have it in your sunny garden as an annual because it just may be the truest blue flower there is, and one of the best flowers out there for hummers. Salvia lyrata
Lyre-Leaved Sage Zones: 5, 6, 7, 8
Lyre-leaved Sage forms a nearly flat rosette of leaves that are dark green to maroon and irregularly lobed or lyre-shaped. From April to June, whorls of small, tubular, lilac flowers appear on stalks 1 foot tall. The real virtue of this species is in its use as a native ground cover for sunny or shady sites with lousy soil. Try the plant instead of Ajuga for a unique perennial ground cover. Withstands light foot traffic. Cat# 1192 -more info-

Salvia lyrata 'Purple Knockout'
Purple Knockout Sage Zones: 5, 6, 7, 8
'Purple Knockout' is a great selection of the Lyre-leaved Sage that has wide, decorataive, deep burgundy leaves. It is low growing, evergreen, and pretty fast growing making it a good plant for planting along pathways. Although its flowers are inconspicuous, its burgundy leaves would look very handsome with the flowers of Blue Phlox, 'Pink Ridge' Phlox, or Blue-eyed Grass. Give it full sun to mostly shade and dry to good soil. Cat# 1314 -more info- Salvia lyrata 'Purple Knockout', Purple Knockout Sage

Sanguinaria canadensis
Bloodroot Zones: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
Bloodroot is a "must have" for the spring woodland garden. In early spring, solitary flower stems emerge through tightly folded, clasping leaves nestled among the previous year's litter. Flowers are snow white or rarely tinged with pink, 1 to 2 inches wide, and resemble fragile daisies with soft petals and bright yellow tufts of stamens in their centers. They stand a few inches or so, tall, erect, and quiver in the spring breezes. But in a day's time, the petals drop, and the large, rounded, deeply lobed, blue-green leaves start to unfurl and expand. Leaves may enlarge to a foot around until they disappear in the summer. Bloodroot has a thick, brittle root or rhizome that exudes a red-orange juice when broken. It is because of the root that Bloodroot can tolerate dry conditions in summer, but otherwise it likes even moisture and shade. Our favorite combination is Bloodroot, Foamflower, Blue Phlox, and Celandine Poppy. These are sold bare root, dormant only. They are not available from April through August. Sarcococca hookeriana var. humilis
Sarcococca, Sweetbox Zones: 6, 7, 8, 9
Native to the western Himalayas, Sarcococca is a great little evergreen, slowly spreading shrub for rich organic soil and shade. The shrub has shiny, pointed, 3" long leaves that are medium to dark green and look good all year long. A ground cover of Sarcococca looks neat and uniform. But in late winter and early spring, many small white flowers produce the sweetest fragrance, that pretty much require you to plant this near a shady entrance to your house. And these are then followed by attractive purple-black berries. We can't really say enough good things about Sarcococca. Cat# 1474 -more info-

Saxifraga stolonifera
Strawberry Geranium Zones: 6, 7, 8, 9
Since I grew up knowing this plant as a hanging basket house plant, I was surprised to see it growing as a hardy ground cover in Connecticut. Clumps grow to about 3 or 4 inches high are silver veined above and reddish, hairy beneath and spread rapidly by means of thread-like, pink runners sprouting new little clumps everywhere in shade and moist soil. The beautiful foliage and ability to spread quickly make this a good evergreen ground cover for southern gardens. Cat# 1195 -more info- Saxifraga stolonifera, Strawberry Geranium

Schizophragma hydrangeoides 'Moonlight'
Japanese Climbing Hydrangea Zones: 5, 6, 7, 8
Japanese Climbing Hydrangea is a great vine for part shade and good, moist soil. Growing 20 to 30 feet tall, this variety, 'Moonlight', has heart-shaped, almost succulent, silvery leaves with green veins and 9 inch, lacey, pie-shaped, creamy white flower clusters in mid to late summer. Plants climb by means of "hold fasts" which stick to any surface that is not smooth. This stout vine becomes woody over time with a moderate growth rate. Branches will project out a foot or two from the main stems, and leaves turn a nice yellow in the fall before falling off. The silvery color of the leaves makes it a great choice to brighten up a shady place. Cat# 1424 -more info- Schizophragma hydrangeoides 'Moonlight', Japanese Climbing Hydrangea

Scutellaria ovata
Skullcap, Heartleaf Zones: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
From shale barrens in the mountains of West Virginia, comes the Heartleaf Skullcap. Forming 2-foot mounds of blue-green and green, 1 1/2 inch crinkly, heart-shaped leaves, Skullcap has mid-summer flowers, which resemble blue-lavender snapdragons, on 2 to 6 inch stems. This showy Skullcap spreads by small, thickened, underground runners, and needs excellent drainage, dry, gritty soil, and part shade. It frequently goes dormant after flowering in mid-summer thereby avoiding summer-time stresses. Other plants preferring the same conditions are Conradina, Pussytoes, Dwarf Iris, Birdsfoot Violet, and Glade Savory. Cat# 1389 -more info-

Nevius Stonecrop Zones: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
Nevius Stonecrop is fairly uncommon in the southeast occurring on limestone and shaley cliffs in sun or light shade. In Tennessee, it is an endangered plant only growing along the Ocoee River gorge in the southeastern corner of the statee. Tiny, blue-green, succulent leaves form evergreen, 3 inch high tuffets with early summer starry white flowers with purple anthers on 4 inch stalks. Although delicate in appearance, Nevius Stonecrop is really quite tough. It likes very good drainage and sun or part shade and dry to moist conditions. Try it with other rock garden types like Alumroot, Birdsfoot Violet, 'Corbett' Columbine, Firepink, Glade Savory, or Cumberland Rosemary. Cat# 1315 -more info- Sedum nevii, Nevius Stonecrop

Smilacina racemosa
False Solomon's Seal Zones: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
When not in flower, False Solomon's Seal is easily confused with Solomon's Seal with its arching 2 to 3 foot stems, alternate, long-pointed leaves, and slow creeping method of getting around. But then the differences: False Solomon's Seal has pleated leaves, Solomon's Seal not. False Solomon's Seal has red berries, Solomon's Seal blue. False Solomon's Seal has many starry, fragrant, late spring flowers borne in dense terminal clusters, Solomon's Seal has bell-shaped flowers along the stem undersides. The two species may grow side by side throughout eastern North America in rich woods but False Solomon's Seal distinctly prefers acidic conditions. In a garden situation, when used in masses, False Solomon's Seal can really shine. Given shade and moisture, it will be stunning with ferns, Asarum, Sweet Woodruff, and Sweet Azalea. Spiranthes cernua odorata 'Chadd's Ford'
Fragrant Ladies Tresses Zones: 6, 7, 8, 9
Spiranthes cernua odorata, a fragrant form of the species commonly known as Nodding Ladies Tresses, grows in wet places along the southeastern coastal plain and down into Texas. 'Chadd's Ford' was discovered in Delaware and is different in that it is more fragrant, the flowers are larger, and it is a very vigorous grower. Each plant forms a clump of shiny, dark green, 8 inch pointed leaves from which a 11/2 to 2 foot tall, cylindrical spike of flowers persists from late summer into fall. The flowers are densely arranged and are yellowish white, tinged green, and usually scented like vanilla. This orchid seems to defy all "rules" about native orchids. 'Chadd's Ford' likes wet to moist, good soil and grows in sun or shade. It not only self-sows prolifically, but it is also stoloniferous and will therefore spread quickly. It is easy and seems not to need any inoculants or special fungi. In fact, it is spreading itself around our shade houses very well. If you have the right spot, give it a try.
