Gaultheria procumbens
Wintergreen, Checkerberry, Teaberry Zones: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
Found in dry or moist acidic woods of eastern North America south to cooler elevations in Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia, Wintergreen is a common evergreen ground-cover well-known for its fresh wintergreen smell when its leaves are crushed. Growing only 6 inches tall, this creeper has dark, broadly oval 1 inch leathery leaves that turn reddish in cold weather. It has solitary, nodding, white urn-shaped summer flowers that are followed by bright red 1/2 inch berries that may remain on the plant from late summer through the following spring! That's a long time. Give Wintergreen good, organic, well drained, acidic soil and shade. The better the soil, the more quickly it will spread. Companions could include Ginseng, Foamflower, Bowmans Root, or many ferns. Cat# 1341 -more info- Gaultheria procumbens, Wintergreen, Checkerberry, Teaberry

Gaura lindheimeri
White Gaura Zones: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
Gaura is a must for sunny gardens with good, well-drained soil where summers are hot and humid. A native of Louisiana, Texas, and Mexico, it stands up quite well to abusive Augusts. Gaura forms a spreading vase-shaped plant 3 to 4 feet tall with an open, airy, willowy aspect. The 1 inch white-fading-to-pink flowers open a few at a time well above the foliage from mid summer to fall. The flowers look like delicate apple blossoms that have lost a petal or two. Flowering is enhanced by cutting the whole plant back to about 1 foot in late June. Once established, Gaura, with its long taproot, is long-lived and very drought tolerant. The red speckles that appear on the leaves are normal. Cat# 1096 -more info- Gaura lindheimeri, White Gaura

Gelsemium sempervirens
Carolina Jessamine Zones: 6, 7, 8, 9
Carolina Jessamine is an evergreen vine found in open woods and thickets throughout the southeast. Flowers are rich yellow, 11/2 inch, open, bell-shaped and appear primarily in early through mid-spring and are very sweetly fragrant. In full sun and rich soil, the vine will flower abundantly and spread quickly, but it also grows in shade and poorer soil. Carolina Jessamine can be used very effectively to twine around a mailbox, lamp post, downspout, or trellis. It can be used as a trailing ground cover as well. We let it ramble over fences at our farm. Cat# 1099 -more info- Gelsemium sempervirens, Carolina Jessamine

Gentiana andrewsii
Andrew's Gentian Zones: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
Andrew's Gentian is a spectacular choice for the moist or wet garden in sun or light shade. Plants grow to a foot or more with bright green paired leaves. Individual flowers are 1 to 2 inches long and urn shaped and a beautiful deep sky blue - a true blue. They resemble oblong pleated balloons that never open. Borne in clusters of 3 to 12 along the stems in the leaf axils, they can be seen from quite a distance and make a real show in late summer and early fall. The Gentians may not be the easiest plants to establish, but once they've taken hold, they are long-lived, maintenance free, and very striking.
